Another Victim Falls Prey to the Iranian Carpet Industry

“That rug really tied the room together” – The Dude (Big Lebowski)

In the proud owner of a Persian carpet!

Another victim falls prey to the Iranian carpet industry! I’ve spent the last 3 days in the grand bazaar here in Tehran (and last 27 days all around this beautiful nation of Iran) looking at some amazing carpets at various bazaars, visiting carpet workshops, witnessing some of the artists themselves in action and finally found the one for me! I’ll keep this for the rest of my life, it’s an amazing marriage carpet, Baluchi style of pure lamb wool with an afshan design and double knots.

Made by Baluchi Nomads (the Iranian/Pakistani boarder area) woven by the bride before the wedding during the courtship process. This is one of a kind and absolutely none like this anywhere in the world, totally individual design by the artist herself.

Similarly with a lot of indigenous artwork around the world the carpet and its designs are a map of the local area it was woven in.

Omid and Amir (the carpet hustlers that I bought it from pictured above) taught me a huge amount about its various patterns, designs and the symbolism behind it.

Absolutely over the moon to be leaving Iran with this incredible piece of work, something I’ll treasure forever. Two days left in Iran and I’m off to India!!
