Vardzia (Georgia) – just shy of the Armenian border lies a huge cave city that at its peak housed 2000 monks.

This incredible cave city holds particular importance for Georgians as it was established by King Giorgi III in the 12th century when he constructed fortifications here.

Possibly the most equally important figure (next to Saint Nino) in Georgian history, Queen Tamar (the daughter of King Giorgi III) continued her fathers work and turned it into a monastery that grew into a huge holy city!

Arguably one of the most impressive sites in Georgia this isn’t to be missed.
